Louis Vander Snickt
was the chief editor of the weekly magazine "Chasse et
Pêche". He was the former manager of the zoological
gardens of Ghent and Dusseldorf. He had ample experience in breeding and
was an excellent observer. The articles he published and illustrated in
"Chasse et Pêche" are very instructive and pleasant to read. Several volumes would not be enough wrote Louis
Huyghebaert later, to enumerate the services rendered to breeding by
this untiring and alert spirit.

le rédacteur en chef de la revue hebdomadaire "Chasse et Pêche".Il
fut le Directeur du jardin zoologique de Gand et de Dusseldorf. Il avait
une grande expérience de l’élevage et était un excellent
observateur. Ces articles parus et illustrés dans « Chasse et Pêche »sont
très instructives et agréables à lire. Plusieurs volumes, écrivit
plus tard Louis Huyghebaert, ne suffiraient pas pour énumérer les
services rendus à l’élevage par cet esprit infatigable et toujours
en éveil.

Professor Ad. Reul
(1849-1907)

Adolphe Reul was born in Braives on 7 June 1849 and died in Brussels on
10 January 1907. Besides being a professor of Zootechnics At the
Public Veterinary School in Cureghem near Brussels, he was also the
author of various essays among which "Les Races de Chiens"
(Dog Breeds) a 400 page book published in 1983.
He offered his valuable scientific knowledge to elaborate the first
standard of the Belgian Shepherd Dog. As a judge over a period of ten
years, he contributed to fixing the types because he was really fond of
our rustic, brave and so intelligent shepherd dog.
In 1899, he was the first to dedicate a book on the Belgian Draft
Mastiff, another breed he was very committed to.
Adolphe Reul est né à Braives
le 7 juin 1849 et est décédé à Bruxelles le 10 janvier 1907. Professeur de
Zootechnie à l’Ecole de médecine vétérinaire de l’Etat à Cureghem
près de Bruxelles, il est l’auteur de plusieurs ouvrages parmi lesquels
« Les Races de Chiens », volume de 400 pages publié en 1893.
Il apporta l’appui précieux de sa science de zootechnicien pour élaborer
le premier standard du Chien de berger belge. Comme juge pendant près de dix
ans, il contribua à fixer les types car il aimait vraiment notre rustique,
vaillant et si intelligent chien de berger.
En 1899, il avait, le premier, consacré un opuscule au chien de trait, race
pour laquelle il oeuvra également.

Louis Huyghebaert

Louis Huyghebaert, born in Malines in 1868, is a significant figure in
the history of the Belgian shepherd dog. He is the precursor of dog
training and a keen amateur of tracking.
Very early, after finishing his studies, he had a vivid interest in the
shepherd dog breeds and had the opportunity to meet Professor Adolphe
Reul when he came to the Nekkerspoel in Malines as a jury member for the
annual bovine contest.
He bred Malinois under the kennel name "Ter Heide" and became
judge for both exhibitions and work trials with the exception of ring
work. In this publication you will find many extracts of his writings.
He was a writer for "Chasse et Pêche", "Cultura"
and several other reviews. His articles are innumerable and one of the
principal sources of information on the Belgian shepherd dogs and
bouviers.
Louis Huyghebaert est une figure importante de l'histoire du chien de
berger belge. C'est le précurseur du dressage et un acharné du pistage.
Il est né à Malines en 1868.
Très tôt, dès la fin de ses études, il s'intéressa aux races de
chiens de berger et eut l'occassion de rencontrer le Professeur Ad. Reul
lorsque celui‑ci venait au Nekkerspoel à Malines en tant que
membre du jury pour le concours annuel des bovins.
Il éleva des malinois sous l'affixe « Ter Heide » et
devint juge tant pour les expositions que pour les épreuves de travail
sauf pour le ring. Dans cet ouvrage vous trouverez de nombreux extraits
de ses écrits. Il fut rédacteur à "Chasse et Pêche", à
"Cultura" et à plusieurs autres revues. Ses articles sont
innombrables et une des principales sources sur les chiens de berger
belge et les bouviers.

Charles Huge
(1865 – 1948)

Charles Huge was an honorary member of the Société Générale
Saint-Hubert and the president of the General assembly of the clubs
affiliated to the Union Cynologique Saint-Hubert. He was a pharmacist by
profession and was universally known in the world of the breeding and
hunting. His fame, as a judge of canine exhibitions, had since long
crossed our borders. He bred nearly a thousand dogs with the kennel name
"Sanior". He judged every breed and almost every kind of
trials. At the 3rd World Cynological Congress in April 1935, he
presented his report entitled "Selection by Heredity.
Charles Huge était membre
honoraire de la Société Royale Saint-Hubert et le Président de
l’Assemblée des Délégués des Clubs affiliés à l’Union
Cynologique Saint-Hubert. Pharmacien, il était universellement
connu dans le monde de l’élevage et de la chasse. Sa renommée,
en sa qualité de juge aux expositions canines, avait depuis longtemps
franchi nos frontières. Il éleva près de mille chiens sous
l’affixe “ Sanior”, et il jugea toutes les races et presque toutes
les épreuves de travail. Au 3ème Congrès Cynologique Mondial en avril
1935, il présenta son rapport intitulé “La Sélection
par l’Hérédité ».
