Continental Toy Spaniel

(Franco-Belgian breed)

Two small size varieties with a large heart.

Papillon                 Phalene

This beautiful little dog animates a lot of famous paintings. You find here a fragment of a painting by Tiziano Vecelli known as "Le TITIEN" dated 1542. It is the portrait of Clarissa Strozzi with a small spaniel which was useful like ideal model of the breed at the time of the Congress of Lille (France) in 1934.
The exact origin of the Continental Toy Spaniel is not really known from accounts of their history. What is know is that Toy Spaniels are a very old breed dating back to at least the thirteenth century.

"Papillon" is French for "butterfly."

Energetic and active little dog, happy to play indoors but also loves a nice walk outside.  A toy spaniel has a easy-going temperament. He is not usually quarrelsome. Usually good with other animals. They can make good watch dogs by alerting owners of strange noises. Toy spaniels are very lovable, intelligent and trainable little dogs, that make excellent companions.

The toy spaniel has a round head. The colours of the hair, basic always white, are the black or all the nuances of the fawn. The hair is abundant, long and silky. The tail is long with plume, the hairs falling down on the back.
There are two ranges of weight: from 1,5 to 2,5 kg and 2,5 to 5 kg for a maximum size of 28 cm.

The Papillon carries the ears planted on the side of the head and opened like the two wings of a butterfly with great hanging fringes. A white line from the end of the muzzle at the top of the head imitates the body of the butterfly.

The Phalene is the variety of the toy spaniel with falling ears. It is exactly the same dog and it has the same ears, but it does not draw up them.
