In a letter dating from 15th of December 1897 and addressed to Louis Vander Snickt, Louis Huyghebaert (the godfather of the Malinois) wrote: "I should inform you that for every twenty short haired shepherd dogs, you will find approximatively one example with black hair. During the operations of the new cadastral revision, I had to visit all the farms of several parishes in the province and each time I have to come to the same conclusion."
The black short haired was seen in dog shows until 1914. Practically decimated by the war, the black short hair will reappear around 1926. This variety offers an example of a particularity that a breed carries within itself and that can never be totally eliminated because it is in the genes.

The fawn colour is varied and extensive as a range.
The range varies from intensive auburn, sometimes
with a lot of overlay to the sable colour.
The gene "sable" is rare for the short hair.
