The color of the Groenendael is black. Groenendael is a Flemish name that means "green valley". It is a locality dependent from the Brabant village of Hoeilaart, a couple of kilometers from Brussels, in one of the most beautiful sites of the forest of Soignes. The Groenendael has had the benefit, from its aparition on, of an enormous success with a peak towards 1912.

The Groenendael is an exceptionally obedient, very alert, and intelligent dog. He is suited to many different kinds of activities (obedience, agility, tracking). He is known to save lives in search and rescue, guard and protect in the police and military, comfort in therapy and service. Very affectionate toward his owner, he reacts intensely and quickly to whomever or anything that threatens his owner or his property. It is thus necessary to have him well under control. The Groenendael is a loyal and faithful companion.

Average size : ideal height of 62 cm for the male; the female to approximately 4 cm less. The triangular ears are carried upwards. A right and firm back, a dog built with force, but of an elegant aspect. Weight: approximately 30 kg. The colour is entirely black from head to tail. P. Beernaert, inhabitant of Uccle and first secretary of the "Club du Chien de Berger Belge", and also very active in the reconstitution of the breed, brought a dog with long black hair with him from Feluy-Arquennes. Its name was PICARD. P. Beernaert took the dog with him and gave it to Nicolas Rose. While doing this he stopped in Uccle and hence came the name of  PICARD D'UCCLE under which it will remain famous.
PICARD D'UCCLE was mated with PETITE. They gave birth to a whole family of superb black dogs, among which the famous DUC DE GROENENDAEL, born on the 1st of May 1893.
